Fraser Valley Stock Dog Trial
August 28-29, 2004
FRASER VALLEY SHEEP DOG TRIAL'S 5TH YEAR!
With Elvin Kopp judging the open class got started at 8:00 am Saturday morning . We had rainy skies and big tents for everyone so we didn't get too wet and the temperature was just right for herding. The day cleared and we had good weather for the rest of the trial. We ran Open first this year in order to give the open handlers a go at fresh sheep, and ran the Novice-Novice class last to give the Novice handlers more sheep to run at the end of the day.
We had a successful novice-novice class with everyone having a good go and came away happy. Jamie and Dot and Larry with Jade had a bit of a competition going for 1st and 2nd on Saturday and Sunday with Larry winning out for the Aggregate Novice Trophy.
Sunday was bright and clear and the breakfast supplied by Carly was excellent. The Pro-Novice class went well with the handlers keeping their dogs back off the sheep. Bob Stephens put in a couple of good runs with RMS Pat and won the Aggregate Pro-Novice Trophy. It was great to see Jim Barron do so well with his dogs Moe and Taff.
Watching the Open class was interesting with some good handler/dog skills coming into play. Lorne Landry put down two good runs with Robbie to win the coveted Aggregate Open Trophy.
We had some new volunteers helping this year and lots of the ever-ready helpers we have had for all our five years. We couldn't do it without them. There was Rose McLeod doing a great job of keeping the score board up to date and correct, Lynn Landry, Charmaine Henderson, Lani Dorman, Carly Revel and Gayle Cochlan scribing for Elvin. There was Gabriele Hutton and Charmaine helping with the welcoming and raffle tables. Pam May, Holly Brunner, Celeste LaCroix, Gayle Cochlan, Lorne Landry, Bob Stephens, Nancy Stephens, Aileen McConnell were setting sheep. Lee Lumb and Dennis Gellings did a great job setting for the novice runs. They delivered each group to the novice handlers nice and quiet so they all had a good opportunity of a good run. Brian Nelson, James Kocsis, Larry Cochlan, Holly Brunner and Pat Gordichuk were out driving the trailers. Tim Ballard and Cathy Kenzie worked the pens and did an awesome job. That Cathy is fantastic! She has just started to handle sheep and she is so good with them, they just move so quietly for her.
Jamie Florence, Rose McLeod and Lani Dorman cooked the Handlers dinner for us, the same great chefs we had last year. Lots of compliments came in for you ladies! We had Bruce McLeod, Joanne Spilsbury, Tim Ballard, Brian Nelson and Lee Lumb setting up the field and the trial grounds. I can't think of anyone who didn't help in one way or another.
You guys did it again! It was a good trial and I'm so glad you all came.
Please call our sponsors and thank them for the contribution to our trial.
