2002 Western Canadian Stock Dog Championship

The WCSDC was held at the Haughton Ranch on the Old Rose Hill Road in Knutsford, B.C. just south of Kamloops on 12, 13 & 14th of October, 2002.  Our Judge was James Lamont of the Isle of Skye, Scotland.  His wife, Christine was his scribe.  The Course Director was Tim Ballard of Aldergrove, B.C.  Event Chairman was Dave Ellison, with his wife, Janet, being the Trial Secretary.  They are from Kamloops, B.C.  The Stock Manager was Holly McWilliams of Falkland, B.C.  Larry Cochlan of Ashcroft, B.C.was the Grounds Manager.  Lorne and Lynn Landry of 100 Mile House, B.C. were in charge of the Advertising/Public Relations duties.  Nancy Walker was in charge of the very capable set out crew and Gayle Cochlan was in charge of the Volunteer Committee.  Bob Stephens was the Program Manager and Vice Chairman.  The BCSDA along with Mair Jensen Blair - Lawyers, Weyerhaeuser Canada Ltd., Radio NL, and the Haughton Ranch were our major sponsors.    We had a very dedicated membership who came together to meet the challenges of organizing and holding a Championship such as this and made it the success that it was.  There were members from all over the province of B.C. and the states of Washington and Oregon who all contributed to the success of this trial.  Raffle contributors from all over the Province made the trial financially successful also.  Wendy Legare and Brian Nelson sponsored a beautiful print of a border collie, framed it and donated the profits from that to the Western Canadians.  We are very appreciative of all the members and people who contributed to the Trial's success.

The trial was held on a 200 acre bunch grass field in the rolling hills of Knutsford B.C.  This is pristine, natural, blue bunchgrass land at approximately 3500 ft. above sea level.  The weather was just great with temperatures in between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius.  Hardly any wind except for the first day, which was Saturday.  The Qualifying course consisted of an outrun, lift and fetch of about 400 yards with a drive of 450 yards total.  There was a shed, pen, single and 12 minutes was allowed to complete the course.  The Qualifying runs were held on Saturday and Sunday with the Double Lift finals taking place on Monday.   Following are the results of the Qualifying runs and the top 10 finalists (shaded).

The Double Lift Finals took place on Monday Oct. 14th. With the first outrun being of 450 yards and the second outrun of 550 yards.  The drive was 600 yards.  The weather was great and the sheep followed suit.  The runs were in progression from lowest qualifying score to highest qualifying score.  25 minutes was allowed to complete the run.  The first outrun set out was half way up a hill and caused some of the dogs to get a bit tight at the top but there were no really great problems throughout the course if the sheep were handled gently but with purpose.  Scott Glen and Cub from Buffalo, Alberta won the Championship with a run that was very steady and with very few holes in it.  There was some difficulty with the international shed but, Scott, in his usual shedding manner, used his skill and finesse to get the job done.  There was very little time left when the pen gate was shut.  As well as winning the Western Canadian Championship Trophy, Scott was awarded the RMS BORDER COLLIE Silver Buckle which is awarded to the Grand Champion of the Western Canadians each time it is held in B.C.  Ken McKenzie and Fly of Drayton Valley, Alta. had a very good run but there was a little sloppiness on both his outruns and fetches.  His international shed was so smooth and deliberate, just as if he had planned it that way, that it was a pleasure to watch and the Judge, James Lamont thought so too awarding Ken a perfect score and the Lamont Trophy for the best International Shed.  This is a trophy that James brought with him from Scotland and will be a perpetual trophy to the winner of the best International Shed in the Western Canadians.  Very thoughtful of James to do this and it is very much appreciated.  Joanne Zoerb and Gidge of Brooks, Alta ran for Alberta in the Driving Championship for the Del'mar Driving Trophy and Dave Ellison and N'Ell of Kamloops, B.C. ran for B.C.  There were no competitors from Saskatchewan.  Joanne won the Del'mar Driving trophy for this year with a very nice run.  Diana Gauthier with Cody was awarded the Best Single trophy sponsored by Columbia Summit Veterinary Hospital.  Gayle Cochlan and Mike won the Best Gather trophy sponsored by Central Animal Hospital.  Shawn Robinson and Del'mar Kim of Okanagon Falls, B.C. won the Best Shed trophy sponsored by Kamloops Veterinary Clinic.  The Best Pen award sponsored by Valleyview Veterinary Clinic was won by Lee Lumb and Shae and the Best Drive sponsored by Riverside Small Animal Hospital was awarded to Dave Ellison and N'ell of Kamloops, B.C.  Following are the scores for the Double Lift Finals of the Western Canadian Stock Dog championship:
